At Performance Therapy®, we integrate the use of advanced soft tissues techniques with functional training and rehab to create a systematic approach to get you back quickly. We use multiple therapeutic and fitness services to develop the optimal personalized treatment program for you.
Active Release Technique is an efficient method for removing the pathology of adhesions from the body. Adhesion, or scar tissue, is the most common pathology in the musculoskeletal system that no one is really talking about. Adhesion does not require trauma to develop it. This is why so many people in chronic pain never know what relief feels like.
The goal of Active Release Technique is to restore optimal texture, motion, and function of the body’s soft tissue and release any entrapped nerves or blood vessels. Active Release Technique can be used to relieve pain in a wide variety of patients. This method of soft tissue manipulation has been used on elite athletes for more than three decades.
Manual Adhesion Release™ (MAR) is the leading form of soft tissue treatment that removes adhesions or scar tissue. Many things can cause adhesions or scar tissue formation. Blows, pulls, tears, postural distortions and overuse injuries such as prolonged positions like sitting or standing can all deprive tissues of oxygen. This lack of oxygenation to structures can result in the formation of dense, fibrotic tissue. This is what we refer to as adhesions. Next to degeneration and arthritis, adhesions are arguably one of the premier causes of muscle and joint pain, yet the most under-diagnosed condition. Adhesions can prevent structures from moving correctly by sticking tissues and nerves together; think glue-like substance. This results in the entrapment of nerves causing numbness, pain, and tingling. Adhesions can also cause weakness, loss of strength and flexibility, which can further develop into secondary injuries. Impingement of the shoulder and hip joints, neck pain, low back pain, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, tight hamstrings, rotator cuff tendonitis, are just a few examples of conditions treated at Performance Therapy.
Instrument Adhesion Release™ (IAR) is a form of manual treatment using a specialized instrument that is designed to effectively remove adhesions without damaging the overlying healthy tissue. IAR’s instrument design, technique, and overall system produces vastly superior results with greater ease and comfort than all other instruments. Instrument Adhesion Release (IAR) is not a generic form of soft tissue “mobilization”. Rather, it is a highly targeted instrument and training combination that improves diagnoses, and allows for faster more effective treatment. Using any instrument to treat soft tissue adhesion requires 3 key components:
If just one component is anything less than perfect, you won’t yield amazing results. IAR is the only system that contains all 3 critical components.
conditions treated at Performance Therapy.Corrective exercises are often applied in the rehabilitative phase of a treatment plan. Rehabilitative exercises vary case to case. The goal of treatment is to first reduce adhesions and restore normal range of motion. Once range of motion is restored, it is important to address muscles that have weakened or atrophied due to the previous presence of adhesions. Strengthening the musculature will support surrounding structures, renew muscular imbalances, and prevent future injury and pain. At Performance Therapy, we provide concise and targeted exercises that are as detailed and catered to each case as our treatment prescriptions. Effective treatments combined with effective exercises lead to better patient outcomes and sustained results.

"I began competing in 1973. Covering more than 80,000 miles in training and competing in five US Olympic Trials, such long-term wear and tear means I now require a lot of recovery support to remain competitive. I stretch. I ice. I use a foam roller; however, the single biggest factor I have found in avoiding chronic injuries is regular body work with Brad McKay at Performance Therapy SC. He is diligent in understanding my biomechanical needs as a racewalker and has solved a long-term hamstring problem I developed from the constant turns in track races. This allowed me to set a US Master's indoor (50-54) record for the Mile racewalk in March, 2013 at 7:09. Whether you are injured or simply need to maintain supple muscles to excel in your event, I recommend a series of sessions with Brad."
